Our Rates, In Plain Sight.

Rate Methodology#
We move freight on American roads, and we price it the way domestic freight is priced: less-than-truckload (LTL) by the hundredweight, full truckload (FTL) by the trailer. Every quote we issue is itemized, so you can see exactly what you are paying for:
- Base rate: The line-haul cost for your lane, mileage, and equipment type.
- Fuel surcharge: Listed as its own line, tied to a published diesel index (Section 2).
- Accessorials: Any special handling or delivery charges, each shown separately (Section 3).
- Insurance: All-risk coverage up to $50,000 per shipment, with declared-value upgrades quoted up front.
- Proof: The paperwork that backs the numbers — the BOL, weight tickets, and delivery receipts.
If a number on your invoice does not match the quote, that is on us to explain in plain English.
Fuel Surcharge#
Fuel moves, and our surcharge moves with it. We calculate the fuel surcharge from the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly national average on-highway diesel price — the same public number anyone can look up.
- Weekly index: The surcharge follows the weekly DOE diesel index, not a number we invent.
- Its own line: The surcharge is never buried in the base rate. It appears separately on every quote and invoice.
- Floats with the index: Because the index moves weekly, the fuel line on a quote can adjust until the shipment is booked (see Section 6).
Accessorial Charges#
Accessorials cover the extra work beyond a standard dock-to-dock pickup and delivery. These are our typical published rates:
- Liftgate at pickup or delivery: $75
- Residential pickup or delivery: $95
- Limited access locations (schools, construction sites, churches, government facilities): $125
- Inside delivery: $150
- Detention: 2 free hours at loading or unloading, then $75 per hour
Accessorials that apply to your shipment appear on the quote before you book — not as a surprise on the invoice.
Freight Class & NMFC#
LTL freight is classified under the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC). Your freight class drives the base rate, and class is set by four things:
- Density: How much space the freight occupies relative to its weight.
- Stowability: How easily it loads alongside other freight.
- Handling: How much care or special equipment it takes to move it.
- Liability: How likely it is to be damaged or stolen, and what it is worth.
Class is declared at quoting. If the freight turns out to be a different class than declared — wrong weight, wrong density, wrong NMFC item — the shipment is rebilled at the actual class. Get the classification right up front and the price holds.
Free Time & Storage#
Freight that sits somewhere is not free to store, so the clock matters. Here is how free time works:
- LTL at the hub: 10 days free at our destination hub. After that, storage is $15 per pallet per week.
- Trailer storage: 10 days free. After that, a held trailer is billed at $25 per day.
If a shipment is approaching the end of its free time, we contact you before storage charges start.
Quote Validity#
A quote is good for 14 days from the date it is issued. After that, the numbers are stale and the quote must be re-run.
- Fuel floats: The fuel surcharge is the one line that can move inside the 14-day window, because it tracks the weekly DOE diesel index (Section 2).
- Everything else holds: The base rate, accessorials, and insurance terms on a valid quote do not change for 14 days.
Payment Terms#
- How to pay: Credit card, ACH transfer, or bank transfer.
- Credit accounts: Approved credit accounts receive net-15 terms from the invoice date.
- What we never accept: Gift cards or cryptocurrency, ever. If someone claiming to be Bolt Freight asks for payment in gift cards or crypto, it is a scam — see our Fraud Awareness page.
New shippers typically prepay until a credit account is established.
Rate Disputes#
If a charge on your invoice does not match the quote, we want to hear about it. Email support@boltfreight.us with:
- Your bill of lading (BOL) number
- The quote you booked against
- The specific line item in question
Our pricing team reviews every dispute and responds within 10 business days. If we got it wrong, we fix it and credit the difference.
Changes to This Structure#
We publish our rate structure so you can hold us to it. When it changes, here is the notice you get:
- Rate increases: 30 days’ notice before any base rate or accessorial increase takes effect.
- Fuel surcharge: May move weekly, because the DOE diesel index moves weekly.
The “Last reviewed” date at the top of this page tells you when this structure was last checked.
